It's been difficult. Kakashi would never admit that in front of all the students because they were worth it and he would never want them to feel bad, but it was difficult. He's never been a people person, he's never been the best with handling the turmoil within his own team, and he's already bad enough with managing himself. A sure recipe for immense struggle with juggling everything that's happened—— from fights, to teen drama, to caring for the sick and injured, to pulling students from the pits of despair in all too familiar situations. Kakashi desires to be seen as a crutch, as a guiding light to the youth, but deep down he knows it isn't meant to be him; moreso, it is his guilt that gnaws away at his confidence to do so. Kakashi had made a promise to himself to carry Obito's dreams upon his shoulders, but how is he meant to do that with this blood on his hands, with the sins that weigh on him like an anchor? He is haunted by the past so much so that he sees its ghosts wherever he goes, and yet he must continue on. He must. There is no other option if he were to atone for his crimes (he believes).

  At first impression:   Kakashi initially comes off as uncaring, lazy, or aloof. It doesn’t help much for his streak of independence and standoffish behaviour, oftentimes alone if it weren’t for Gai's persistence and friendship with him. But never, for a moment, write Kakashi off as apathetic. His life was shaped from tragedy after tragedy striking him, creating at first a hardened exterior that was near impossible to penetrate. His stubborn reliance on himself and his abilities only bolstered this, but over time after being forever changed by the words of a long dead friend, he mellowed out. He’s become a rather humble, laid-back man, able to grow stern when need be. He cares deeply for the people in his life, willing to go to extensive lengths to keep them safe from harm—— especially his students. His maturity into adulthood has left him harsher on his actions than before, and with an even harsher guilt complex. So much tragedy, so much bloodshed and death around him or by his own hand, has happened. It's impossible for him to not blame himself—— but Kakashi's guilt is cruel and merciless.

Kakashi Hatake was born into the world as the only other Hatake remaining; and he was born with high expectations from his village, for his father, White Fang of the Leaf, was considered a genius amongst his fellow jonin. Sakumo was a kind man, and a kinder father. He valued companionship and camaraderie more than anything else, and at first, Kakashi did too. Without a mother to raise Kakashi, Sakumo had big shoes to fill with raising his child, and he did not disappoint.Sakumo quickly learned his son was a genius, a prodigy. He was already so talented as a ninja, graduating with top grades in the academy at age five. Such a radiant and bright light, one who looked at his father like he was the world. And to him, he was; the Hatakes are loyal people, after all, and their loyalty runs deep in their veins. He so deeply craved for his father's love and approval, which he always gained in abundance, and oh, did it make him soar.At age six, Kakashi graduates the chūnin exams, and right around the same time, Sakumo leaves for a mission. True to his morals, Sakumo abandons the mission to save his teammates—— a taboo within the shinobi code. Within a single night, the reputation of the Hatakes was ruined; the failure of such an important mission was a fatal blow to the Land of Fire, and for that, scorn rained down on Sakumo like hellfire. Kakashi saw his father as untouchable. The night he discovers his father's belly slit open is when he learns he wasn't, and more importantly, was a fool.

Sakumo's suicide fundamentally changed Kakashi. It changed his will of fire to something cold and clinical; the night he learned what happens when good dogs disobey orders, when a sharp weapon breaks, was the night he shed himself of his father's beliefs. Four years after Kakashi's own graduation, he's thrown into a team with Obito Uchiha and Rin Nohara under Minato Namikaze after countless other teams he's been under completely backfiring. He's difficult and stubbornly sticks to the shinobi code, as all good dogs should do, and he does so unapologetically and with ferocity.It comes to a head during the Kannabi Bridge Mission, assigned to Team Minato and under his guidance as a freshly promoted jonin at age twelve. The mission, a sabotage mission, quickly goes awry when Rin is kidnapped. Obito and Kakashi, who's never seen eye to eye, get into an ugly spat; "those who break the rules are scum, but those who abandon their friends are worse than scum." , "your father was a hero" are the first words that broke through to Kakashi, all said by a boy he thought had too big of a heart.And yet he abandons the mission. He rescues Obito, he sacrifices his eye for Obito, and finally works with him all for the goal of rescuing Rin. And in a cruel twist of fate, as if punishment for being a bad dog, for disobeying orders—— Obito is killed. Brutally, pulverized under thousands of tons of rocks; he leaves this world not without giving his gift to Kakashi, for becoming jonin. His Sharingan, that awakened to protect Kakashi.

Obito was a comet in Kakashi's life; he left a big, colourful streak in his sky that forever changed him. Just as his father's suicide has scarred him, Obito's death, his kind words despite how cold Kakashi was towards him, has left its own wounds in his psyche he's unsure could ever heal.Kakashi wonders if it was his destiny for death to sweep through his life if he ever got too comfortable, grew too close or fond of people. It happens so quickly; within the span of two years, he loses the only three people he cared for. Rin spears herself on his Chidori, and thus his promise to Obito is broken. Minato, now deemed Lord Fourth, enrolls Kakashi into the ANBU; and hardly a year later, Minato and Kushina die shortly after their child is born during the Nine Tails attack.Kakashi wonders if this is what his father felt, if this despair in the bottom of his gut is what he carved out of himself all those years ago. Kakashi, alone in the world once more, loses himself in his work as an ANBU. He becomes deeply depressed and suicidal; he makes reckless decisions, runs his chakra down to the wire, tanks through S-rank solo missions, does everything to prove he is a good dog. He is loyal to the village, he will atone for his sins.He runs himself ragged in the ANBU until he's relieved of his duties by the Third Hokage following the events of the Uchiha Massacre, whom deemed those with kind hearts should not be in the ANBU.

Kakashi Hatake is Konohagakure University's only veterinarian professor and is one of the English professors. He's had a rocky past with another college, ending up having to leave after it caused too much mental strain on him. He's always been a talented individual; graduating highschool at age ten and receiving his first college degree at age fourteen, he's (allegedly) continued to pursue more and more in his academic career before he'd finally settle as a professor. Kakashi is a man surrounded by mystery; his scar and prosthetic eye plus his mask do little to aid in that. He wouldn't have obsessively buried himself in his studies to the point of neglect if it weren't for the endless misfortune in his life; the suicide of his father at age six, forcing him into foster care by Minato and Kushina, then a fatal car accident that permanently disabled his friend Rin and (seemingly) killed his other friend Obito.
